Joshua Zirkzee is poised to become Manchester United’s initial acquisition of the summer, having reached an agreement with Bologna.

The Dutch forward will be United’s first signing under the INEOS ownership, as confirmed by Fabrizio Romano, who revealed the deal’s finalization. United had been closely monitoring Zirkzee in recent weeks, culminating in the transfer following his departure from Euro 2024 on Wednesday evening.

In the previous season, Zirkzee netted 12 goals and contributed seven assists for Bologna, playing a pivotal role in the club’s first Champions League qualification since the 1960s. According to Manchester World, United prioritized securing another forward during the summer transfer window following Anthony Martial’s departure as a free agent.

Rasmus Højlund, who joined from Atalanta last summer, scored 16 goals in his debut season, prompting speculation about how the two forwards will complement each other. The report suggests that Zirkzee will serve as a backup to Højlund, with the Dane expected to remain the primary striker.

Interestingly, Zirkzee is seen as a versatile player capable of operating across the front line, which means he could play behind the main striker or on the flanks. The Dutchman has previously stated that he doesn’t consider himself a traditional number nine.

“I’m not a pure centre forward. I mentioned a year ago that I prefer playing with an attacking partner,” he told Corriere della Sera earlier this year. “But Motta turned me into a 9 and a half. I’m not like Arnautovic; I enjoy coming forward after playing the ball and supporting the team. And scoring goals.”

Zirkzee is set to complete his medical at Carrington on Friday before an official announcement. He is expected to join the squad in the United States after a short holiday.
