Erik ten Hag expressed his disappointment following Manchester Unitedâs 1-0 defeat to Rosenborg in their pre-season opener, labeling the teamâs performance as âfar from good enoughâ and âbelow the standard of top football.â
The Norwegian side, who are deep into their domestic season, dominated the match, striking the post four times and taking 22 shots before Noah Holm secured the win in the 93rd minute.
Ten Hag started the match with notable players including Marcus Rashford, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Jonny Evans, Mason Mount, and captain Casemiro, but substituted all outfield players at halftime as planned.
Reflecting on the game, Ten Hag emphasized the importance of maintaining Manchester Unitedâs high standards. âWinning is expected. If we canât win, we must not lose, especially not in the last second,â he told MUTV.
Young goalkeeper Radek Vitek was pivotal, making six crucial saves to keep the score down. Ten Hag acknowledged Vitekâs efforts but stressed that the teamâs overall performance facilitated those saves. âThis is not the standard for top football. Each player must ensure they are fit and ready,â he added.
Despite the switch to a younger lineup in the second half, Ten Hag noted that while the young players attempted to follow instructions, they ultimately fell short. âTheir attitude and willingness are there, but we didnât execute today,â he said.
