OPINION: Blackpool must ensure ex-Middlesbrough and Norwich City defender is still at Bloomfield Road next season
The announcement of Blackpool’s retained list confirmed talks were still ongoing between James Husband and the club.
The defender initially made the move to Bloomfield Road on loan in 2019, before making his stay permanent, picking up 177 appearances in Tangerine.
It is crucial that the club keep the 30-year-old in their squad for next season. The departures of Matty Virtue, Marvin Ekpiteta, Shayne Lavery and Callum Connolly have already been confirmed, but if Husband was added to that list, he’d be the biggest loss.
Although it makes sense for the team to rebuild and revamp, there are instances when holding onto a little bit of experience is essential. His skill was on display several times, and when he was in the side, it truly did make a difference. He fits that approach and can be advantageous if the Seasiders stick with playing three at the back.
Neil Critchley, who refers to him as a “lieutenant” on the field, has often emphasized how crucial he is. The head coach of Blackpool also mentioned that he had spoken his opinions over the defender’s future.
Even though a deal hasn’t been reached yet, if negotiations are continuing, there is still hope. Husband and other players like him are essential if the team is serious about competing for the championship the next season.
This summer, finding new players and making sure they replace the departing players with players of a higher caliber will be crucial, but keeping their top players will also be important, as will managing the contracted players who might draw interest from other teams.
Husband will always be held in the highest regard at Bloomfield Road for his time in Tangerine, which is thankfully still very much alive.
