OFFICIAL DONE DEAL✅✅: Second Bid Accepted, Medicals Booked Arsenal Complete First Major Signing Of The Season
Ajax goalkeeper Tommy Setford has agreed personal terms ahead of a move to Arsenal, sources have told Football Insider.
The 18-year-old will now travel to north London to undergo a medical and finalise terms, and the deal should be completed within the next 48 hours.
A full agreement for the transfer has been reached between Arsenal and Ajax after the Gunners moved quickly to get a deal over the line.
Mikel Arteta had been keen to bring in a young goalkeeper while Aaron Ramsdale’s future at the Emirates remains up in the air.
Arsenal academy goalkeepers Ovie Ejeheri, James Hillson and Arthur Okonkwo were all released last month, making room for Setford to fill in.
Arsenal agree full terms with Ajax and Tommy Setford
Setford has racked up 50 appearances for the Ajax academy sides already in his young career, but is yet to have been involved in a senior squad.
The goalkeeper was born in the Netherlands and came through the youth academy at Ajax, but has represented England between Under-16 and Under-20 levels.
He has made a name for himself in the Ajax academy and is extremely highly rated both at the Dutch club and within the England youth system.
The Gunners had also made a move to sign Wolves goalkeeper Daniel Bentley and had lined up a fresh offer before reaching a breakthrough in talks with Ajax.
However, as revealed by Football Insider, they are still lining up a new bid for Bentley, with Ramsdale’s long-term future set to prove decisive.
Should Ramsdale leave North London, Bentley could arrive as the backup to David Raya, while Setford would be the third choice and academy starter given his lack of experience
