Braves bolster pitching staff by signing Aaron Bummer and revising Reynaldo Lopez’s contract.
The Atlanta Braves have made substantial offseason changes, including signing left-hander Aaron Bummer to a two-year contract worth $13 million. In tandem, they have updated a previous pact with All-Star right-hander Reynaldo Lopez, which is now a three-year deal worth $30 million with an additional $4 million guaranteed. These moves show the Braves’ approach of strengthening their pitching staff in preparation for the 2017 Major League Baseball season.
Aaron Bummer, 31, was previously with the Chicago White Sox, when he signed a five-year, $16 million contract with a $7.25 million option and a $1.25 million buyout. Bummer’s new contract with the Braves pays $3.5 million next season and $9.5 million in 2026. He has a strong track record, posting a 3.58 ERA in 56 outings last season. His expertise and ability to deal with high-pressure circumstances make him an important asset to the Braves’ bullpen.
Reynaldo Lopez, at 30 years old, has had a tremendous career and signed a three-year, $30 million contract in November. His amended contract includes a salary of $4 million in 2024, followed by $8 million in 2025, $14 million in 2026, and $8 million in 2027. Lopez had a stellar season last year, with a 1.99 ERA in 25 starts, establishing him as a crucial member of the Braves’ rotation for the next season.
In a further move to bolster their pitching depth, the Braves also selected right-hander Domingo Gonzalez’s contract from Triple-A Gwinnett. This decision demonstrates the team’s commitment to building a strong and versatile pitching staff, combining both experienced players like Bummer and Lopez with emerging talents. The Braves are clearly focusing on creating a competitive roster as they aim for championship contention.
Both Bummer and Lopez have pledged to donate 1% of their salaries to the Atlanta Braves Foundation, showcasing their commitment to community involvement. With their combined expertise and talent, they are expected to play crucial roles in the Braves’ campaign for success in 2024, reinforcing the team’s position as a formidable contender in Major League Baseball.
