How could Chelsea line up against a rudderless Manchester United at Old Trafford?
After the disappointment of our midweek League Cup exit at Newcastle, we return north this weekend to take on crisis-club Manchester United, who sacked Erik ten Hag last weekend and have yet to, as of this writing, officially appoint Rúben Amorim as his replacement. But even if that announcement does get made shortly, Ruud van Nistelrooy is expected to remain in interim-charge at Old Trafford until the next international break in November.
That said, new-manager bounces don’t always differentiate between interim and non-interim versions, and United did easily win on Wednesday already, 5-2, against Enzo Maresca’s former club. United did play almost all their best players to achieve that result, so hopefully they’re all tired now.
By comparison, a fully rotated eleven from Maresca should have allowed the “A” team to get essentially a week to rest and recover — not that our injury list is very long these days. In fact, the only player confirmed unavailable is loanee Jadon Sancho, who’s technically just on loam and thus cannot play against his parent club.
