Quinn Ewers issues a frightening warning as Texas makes a big Arch Manning decision

Steve Sarkisian is facing a tough call in choosing between Quinn Ewers and Arch Manning as the Texas season unfolds.

Ewers had a rough outing in the Longhorns’ 30-15 defeat to the Bulldogs, leading to Sarkisian benching Manning in the second quarter, hoping he could penetrate Georgia’s defence. However, Manning’s time on the field ended with a strip-sack before the break, underlining the Bulldogs’ defensive prowess.

After a challenging first half, Ewers returned to the game in the second half, managing to throw for 211 yards and two touchdowns, despite the earlier setbacks.

Reflecting on Texas’ performance against Georgia, former NFL star Damien Harris shared his insights with Essentially Sports, drawing parallels between Ewers and Manning’s situation and the renowned quarterback rivalry of Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa at Alabama.

I see the same similarities that I saw with Jalen and Tua,” Harris confessed. “I see it kind of playing out with Quinn and Arch and you know, it’s just hard because it does throw a wrench in team chemistry.”

Harris also suggested that being temporarily sidelined might have impacted Ewers’ psyche, noting that his future prospects depend on his performance for the remainder of the season. “I believe Sark will handle it well throughout the rest of the season,” he concluded optimistically.

“But I just worry about Quinn’s mental fortitude moving forward because now it’s apparent [that he won’t be starting].”

Harris expressed his concerns, suggesting that the Longhorns are already considering Manning as their future starting shot caller, despite Sarkisian’s public denial.

Following the match, head coach Sarkisian clarified his decision to temporarily bench Ewers after a challenging first half against Georgia. “I was trying to settle Quinn down a little bit, try to give us a little bit of a spark,” he shared post-defeat.

He added, “We’ve got to get out of our own way. We’re not playing very good as a unit right now. Thank God our defence is putting out some fires for us.”

Sarkisian was quick to emphasise that Ewers isn’t leaving and will continue as the starter, regardless of external perceptions.

“Quinn’s our starting quarterback,” he affirmed. “I appreciate the fact that we’re fortunate enough to have a backup like Arch that can come into the game and provide a spark in some sense, but at the end of the day, Quinn’s our starter.”
