A long time ago, the Cleveland Browns had a quarterback that was popular throughout the city: Baker Mayfield. After defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers in the first round of the 2021 NFL playoffs, he joined LeBron James on Cleveland’s list of most beloved athletes.

A year later, Mayfield had a forgettable season, spending the majority of it nursing a shoulder ailment. The Browns then traded for Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson, which left Mayfield without a home

When Cleveland considered dealing for Watson, many Browns supporters were unhappy and did not want to leave Mayfield. In March 2022, the Cleveland Browns fanbase became divided between those who wanted to keep Mayfield and those who did not. This escalated into a social media conflict that continues to this day.

Whenever Watson played badly, 99% of the time, the Browns fans who didn’t want him went after the fans who did and talked about how great Mayfield was playing; the worst thing happened on Sunday when Watson left the Brown’s Week Seven loss to the Bengals with, an Achilles injury and fans started to cheer.

 

 

Many of the supporters cheering were in charge of Mayfield’s love and never wanted Watson in the first place, and they took advantage of the occasion to tell Watson how much they disliked him during one of his darkest moments. Mayfield had little control over what happened to him in Cleveland, but he handled it well. Still, the die-hard Cleveland Baker supporters sparked a serious problem within the Browns fanbase, which has only become worse with each passing season. Now that Watson will most likely never play quarterback for the team again, it will be interesting to see how they react to the new quarterbacks  will be interesting.

It’s amazing to see Mayfield having such success in Tampa, but he was never going to work in Cleveland after the 2021 season, and fans should let him leave. Hopefully, the new quarterback will not cause too much trouble and will be able to bring the fans back together.
