Every now and then, Letitia Wright catches herself thinking “Obama’s going to take his kids to see this film” or “Oprah might watch it”.

The 24-year-old Guyanese-British actor is one of the stars of the black superhero blockbuster Black Panther, which is being touted as “revolutionary”. Playing teenage scientist Shuri, princess of the planet Wakanda, she joins big-name actors Lupita Nyong’o, Michael B. Jordan and Forest Whitaker.

Lauded by UK Vogue as part of the next generation of great British actresses, Letitia is sassy and confident, with a puckish air to her androgynous features. This is shaping up to be her year: she’s already appeared in The Commuter with Liam Neeson, Black Panther opens this week, and next month she’ll be seen in Ready Player One, Steven Spielberg’s virtual reality movie
