ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit believes the “drive of the year” this season took place in one of the biggest matchups of the year in Week 8.
A game between two SEC juggernauts, Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs traveled to Austin to take on Steve Sarkisian and the Texas Longhorns in a top five matchup with SEC championship and College Football Playoff implications on the line.
Georgia, then ranked No. 5, jumped out to a comfortable 23-0 lead at the half in surprising fashion. Texas’ high-powered offense, led by star quarterback Quinn Ewers, was limited to just 38 yards of total offense in the first two quarters.
It seemed like the Bulldogs were in for an easy final 30 minutes in DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium Beck (15).
But things took a turn in the second half. After Texas marched down the field for its first touchdown of the night, adding a 2-point conversion, Georgia’s lead fell to 23-8 with momentum swinging in favor of the Longhorns.
Adding to the hysteria, UGA star quarterback Carson Beck threw his third interception of the night on what would become an extremely controversial play. Texas was initially penalized for defensive pass interference before Longhorns fans peppered the field with objects in protest. After a lengthy discussion, officials reversed the call and set up another Texas score to make it 23-15.
